You can give any concrete surface an attractive appearance using concrete stains. It is an affordable way of adding
latest design trends to your garage floors and other concrete flooring. The procedure also does not involve
complicated steps and therefore you can decorate the surface without taking much trouble. However, you need to
consider several aspects in order to get the maximum benefit of the process.
There are two types of concrete stains commonly available in the market. The first category includes acid-based
solutions. If you use an acid-based solution for the process, you must take several safety precautions. These
products contain chemical substances that might cause irritation of the skin and eyes. Further, the application
also produces strong smells.
The other type of concrete stains includes acrylic solutions. These products are less corrosive since they are more
like water-based latex paints. These solutions are also less likely to cause allergic irritations. Unlike
acid-based applications, acrylic stains produce fewer odors. If the concrete surface has many flaws, it will be a
good idea to use an acrylic stain. These solutions seep down in to pores very easily because of the nature of the
solvent and cover existing flaws much better.
Concrete stains offer you a full range of colors to stain concrete surfaces decoratively. When the product is
applied on the surface, the stain particles of the solution react with the concrete. This reaction might result in
a color variation of the stain. The degree of this effect depends on factors such as the surface properties of the
concrete and how the product reacts with the surface. Therefore, it is advisable to test the application on a small
patch of concrete before spraying it on the entire surface. This will help you make sure that the color variation
is acceptable.
The product has to be uniformly sprayed to decorate the concrete surface. This can be done either by yourself or by
an experienced professional. If you opt to do the job yourself, you must first try to stain a small test area. Then
you can decide whether you are confident or not to carry out the entire project yourself. You need a lot of
patience to spray the stain properly. Remember that concrete stains give uniform color and texture only when they
are properly sprayed.
Before you spray concrete stains, you must necessarily cover the near by areas. This will prevent staining of areas
other than the concrete you are dealing with. After the staining process, you need to neutralize the surface. This
step removes stain residues on the surface, which might cause irritations.
The appearance of the treated surface can be enhanced by applying a sealant. This finishing step will protect your
work for years to come. If the sealant is properly applied, it might even eliminate marking on the treated
surface.
If the concrete surface is extremely old or blemished you should not directly spray concrete stains. You must
remember that the final outcome of the staining process also depends on properties of the concrete surface. If it
has too many flaws, you correct them or resurface the concrete. This will give you the full benefit of the staining
process.
