Concrete Floor Paint

Concrete floor paint protects concrete against natural or any other causes of wear and tear. It also helps in making the concrete look more attractive. Before you can start the process of painting a concrete floor, it has to be fully prepared. Preparation comprises of degreasing and cleaning the floor. Degreasing is carried out using chemicals, which are readily accessible in the market.

The concrete floor paint should also be checked for any existing curing compounds, which depend on its age. Usually newer concrete has an assortment of curing compounds, which could prevent the paint coating from sticking to the concrete. The moisture content should also be checked and if there are any signs of moisture presence, then the concrete floor painting should not be painted. The moisture has to be removed first and its sources eliminated.

After the two aspects have been checked, the next thing you should do is check the profile of the floor. Hard and unyielding concrete will not allow the paint to stick properly. An acid etcher can be used to improve the profile of the concrete. The most suitable profile is one that laves the feel of medium course sand paper. Any residue of the spray acid has to be washed thoroughly with water mixed with a neutralizer such as ammonia.

Once you are done with all these processes, then the concrete floor painting can commence. The paint chosen and the level of coating depend on the use that the floor will be put to. The quality of paint to be used should not be overlooked, as this will determine the maintenance costs in future. If you want to decorate the floor, you have a number of options. To attain the best results while decorating a floor, the profile of the floor has to be suitable. In addition, make sure that the color and pattern matches the ambience of the surroundings.

One of the best paint coatings you can apply to your concrete floor paint is the Epoxy coating. These because it is normally used on industrial floors hence durability, oil and grease resistance and general toughness are guaranteed. Currently epoxy paints are not only available for use in industries, but also in homes and especially for garage and basement floors. Apart from reducing your maintenance costs, being long lasting and waterproof, another major advantage is that the epoxy paints are quite affordable. They are also available in kits that allow you to do the painting yourself.

Which type of epoxy paint should you go for?

Essentially, there are three types of concrete floor paintings also known as epoxies. The first type is solid and it is the most expensive and toxic. This type requires professional application. Then there is the solvent based which are less strong but can only be used in industries. They comprise of 40 to 60 percent solids and toxic solvents. If you have to use them, the room has to be properly ventilated. The third type, which is water based is the cheapest. They are less durable as compared to the solvent based but are efficient for residential use and more user friendly for them to be used by a non-professional. You can buy them from the local home improvement stores.

The most important thing to keep in mind while using the concrete floor painting is that for them to last long, the floor has to be properly prepared. Whichever type you use, its durability depends on the surface preparation.
