If you have an aging, cracked concrete driveway, you can make it look good as new with
concrete driveway resurfacing. It will take some preparation and work, but you can have a beautiful driveway that
enhances the beauty of your home.
In order to start the concrete driveway resurfacing, you will need to rent or buy a pressure washer. Wash down the
driveway thoroughly, removing all dirt and debris. Then, add a concrete cleaning solution to the pressure washer’s
reservoir. Spray on the surface of your driveway, then pressure wash and thoroughly clean the surface of and any
cracks in the driveway.
Mix your polymer-based concrete mix with water to a thick consistency in a bucket for the concrete driveway
resurfacing. Fill in any cracks in your driveway. Using a trowel, force the mix into the cracks and smooth down as
evenly as possible. Allow the mixture to dry overnight. After drying, cover the cracks with duct tape.
To continue the concrete driveway resurfacing, coat the duct tape with cement a smooth as much as possible. Let dry
and then evenly apply a coat of elastomer solution to keep the tape in place. Mix another batch of concrete that is
much thinner than the thick batch you made for the cracks. If you would like, you can add color to your concrete.
Spread over the entire concrete driveway resurfacing area. Try to get it as smooth as possible with no overlap
marks.
When this resurfacer sets up, use a broom with a long handle to give the driveway a fine texture to keep it from
being so slippery when wet. You can stain the concrete after it sets, if you would like. You will be able to walk
on your driveway after 6 hours and it can be driven on in 24 hours after concrete driveway resurfacing.
You may also want to consider a driveway overlay, which will give it a stone or brick pattern look. In addition,
you can have patterns carved into the surface or have an exposed finish with small stones imbedded into the
driveway. Concrete driveway resurfacing can also be done with staining which can give your driveway the look of
natural stone or wood.
Considering the price of a completely new driveway, paying $25 for a bag of concrete that covers around 50 square
feet is a bargain for concrete driveway resurfacing. Be sure to work on a day with low humidity and mild
temperatures. The existing concrete should be around 50 degrees F.
You have many possibilities for concrete driveway resurfacing. However, if you have major damage to your driveway,
you may have to take up the old concrete and replace it. Get advice from a professional to find out what your
options are.
